The Great Alpine Highway
This coast-to-coast route traverses the Southern Alps, offering incredible views of mountains and rivers. From Christchurch, the 255km route weaves across river plains before rising to travel through Porters Pass and Arthur’s Pass National Park. Highlights include the impressive Waimakariri and Otira River gorges, Otira Viaduct and Castle Hill Rocks and Cave Stream Reserve.
Christchurch to Dunedin via Lake Tekapo
On this trip, mountains and turquoise lakes form the mind-blowing scenery. Stargazing by Lake Tekapo and seeing Tasman Glacier are among the unforgettable experiences that this route offers. As you travel south towards Dunedin, prepare your camera to capture the brilliant colours of Lake Benmore, Lake Aviemore, and Lake Waitaki. Along Katiki Point, look out for fur seals and yellow-eyed penguins.
Thermal Explorer Highway
Journey through the centre of the North Island through a riverside drive that will take you to Hamilton. In that city, you will see gardens and riverboat cruises. The next destination is Rotorua, popular for its geothermal attractions and Maori villages. An hour south is Taupo, a trout-fishing mecca located on the edge of New Zealand’s largest lake. Across the lake are the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park.
Southern Scenic Route
Follow the east coast road from Dunedin to reach The Catlins region, which is known for its beautiful beaches, seals, dolphins, and penguins. Further down, the majestic scenery of Fiordland will amaze you. Te Anau is the place for lake cruises and cave exploration while Milford Sound will astound you with its high peaks and waterfalls.
